It's Been a Minute!
Posted on July 04 2021
Hi hello!
It’s been a minute and I hope you are all having a lovely summer so far. We’re finally getting some relief from the scorching temperatures in Calgary and I personally have never been more grateful for air conditioning.
Hard to believe that our last blog was two months ago! One of my goals for 2021 was to write a monthly blog but what can I say, life sometimes gets in the way. I made the call to take the month of June to rest, recharge and focus on other activities. The month started off with a visit with my mom for her birthday. I hadn’t seen her since Christmas and while we talk pretty much every day, getting to talk to her in person and spend time together fills me with so much joy. I got to take her to all of my favourite garden stores, eat yummy meals and watch Cruella together. (Which if you have not watched yet, I highly recommend! The costumes, music and theatrics are incredible with an outstanding performance by Emma Stone.)
The rest of June was full of a combination of preparing and marking Final Exams for the university courses I teach and planting my vegetable and flower gardens. No easy feat to mark about 75 exams AND get my backyard and community garden plots ready for the summer. I am now the Proud Plant Parent to 50 heirloom tomato plants and will definitely have lots of veggies to give away!
I also felt that it was important to give space for other important causes and voices to be highlighted in June – namely Pride and Indigenous History Months. Indigenous peoples across Canada are experiencing unfathomable trauma as the remains of over 1,500 innocent children have been discovered to date in unmarked graves at former residential school sites. It didn’t feel right to be talking about summer fashion while people are experiencing this level of tragedy and hurt. I can’t imagine being taken away from my family, forced to speak a different language, abused, tortured or worse. In the spirit of truth and reconciliation, I stand in solidarity with the Indigenous community.
The Curvy Shop acknowledges that as a business operating in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, we live, work and play on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations, the Métis Nation (Region 3), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta. They were the original occupants of this land and continue to be here to this day. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be present in this territory.
I am sorry I didn’t know and wasn’t taught about your pain.
I am sorry you were hidden from the world as we continued on without you.
I’m listening now and commit to doing more and being better.
Every Child Matters.
Until next time,
Aymie
