Style Story: Calvin Klein
Posted on November 06 2019
For anyone who grew up in the 90’s like me, it would be hard not to remember Calvin Klein’s controversial ad campaigns for their underwear and perfume. Many of the ads featured scantily-clad men (hello Marky Mark!), waif-thin topless women and androgynous models.
I grew up admiring these ads, cutting them out of magazines like Vogue and Seventeen and putting them up on the walls of my bedroom. Like many girls my age, I also aspired to look like the models and fit into designer clothes, and this was one of my first introductions to Diet Culture.
Fortunately, Calvin Klein has come a long way since the 90’s. Like many designers, the brand has recognized that plus-sized women represent a significant proportion of the population and they’re taking notice, offering fashion-forward, modern and structured pieces for reasonable prices. The brand is also starting to feature more plus-size models and celebrities in their ad campaigns. Read more about Calvin Klein’s journey to size inclusivity here.
